Enchanted and Intriguing Universes, Truths and Realities The works published in this volume by Jonas C. Haefeli, who calls himself a "quarterly painter", appear surrealistic at first glance, However, on closer inspection they rather reflect the spirit of Fantastic Realism. The roots of this style lie in German and Dutch Mannerism, in Art Nouveau, in New Objectivity, and also in Surrealism. Haefeli's paintings are characterized by - only supposedly realistic - fantasy spaces whose access must first be deciphered.
Each painting is juxtaposed with a page of text with poetic, (pseudo-)scientific, ironically pointed, or also decidedly funny-absurd picture lines, quotations, newspaper clippings and miniature stories. In this way, the enigmatic works of art are explained, supplemented or even exaggerated caricature-style by yet another dimension. This entertaining, informative, or even confusing interaction is what makes this picture book so unique. -
Niki de Saint Phalle and the Tarot Garden

Inspired by Antoni Gaudi's Parc Güell in Barcelona and the mannerist Bomarzo Park, Niki de Saint Phalle created her sculpture park in Garavicchio, in the southernmost part of Tuscany. In this vast garden, the 22 cards of the tarot's Major Arcana are represented in the form of enormous sculptures, 12 to 15 metres high, made of painted polyester and reinforced concrete, and covered in mosaics, mirrors, multicoloured ceramics and coloured Murano glass.
At the end of the 1970s, after her Nouveau Réalisme years of revolt and the more feminist period of the "Nanas", Niki de Saint Phalle created the fairy world of her Tarot Garden at Garavicchio. This enchanted world was, for her, the ultimate achievement of her oeuvre, its culmination. When she died in 2002, she left the Tarot Garden uncompleted.
This monograph, which Niki de Saint Phalle herself planned, and for which she chose the pictures, is the first comprehensive study of the Tarot Garden. It provides a unique glimpse into her creative process. This book is also available in German and Italian. -
The work of Sparagana is known for its various types of physical manipulation. Following this concept, the book proposes an alternative "reading" of his work in the form of a literal understanding of visual information as text.
His large-scale work of art "Crowds & Powder: The Revolutionaries" is translated into the format of a mass-market paperback book. Arranged over eighty double-page spreads, each individual page frames a full-scale fragment of this work. Not only does it allude to a growing discourse on the control and manipulation of visual narrative, as increasingly witnessed from political imagery to popular culture, but it also investigates the way we read and process (visual) language.

Le triomphe du rêve
Après une période de discrétion, le symbolisme revient sur le devant de la scène. Il ouvre la voie aux grands mouvements du XXe siècle, comme le surréalisme, l'expressionnisme, l'abstraction et "l'art des aliénés", en élargissant les frontières, en explorant de nouveaux territoires. La création et l'activité d'Abraham Hermanjat - précurseur de Giacometti, Hodler et Amiet
C'est à juste titre que l'on compte Abraham Hermanjat (1862-1932) parmi les plus grands artistes suisses du début du XXe siècle. Bien des aspects des maîtres suisses de ce temps se retrouvent en effet dans son oeuvre picturale : précurseur de Klee et de Moilliet, Hermanjat s'est intéressé aux décors exotiques et à la lumière si particulière de l'Afrique du Nord, où il a passé plusieurs années. Comme Giovanni Giacometti, il avait à coeur de reproduire le monde quotidien à travers des couleurs impressionnistes. C'est en revanche Ferdinand Hodler qu'évoquent son amour de la nature et ses représentations enchanteresses des Alpes et des lacs suisses ; quant à son coloris expressif, il fait songer aux oeuvres de Cuno Amiet. C'est la première fois qu'une vaste monographie rend justice à l'oeuvre d'Hermanjat. Des historiens de l'art et des spécialistes se penchent sur sa création depuis des perspectives diverses et affirment ainsi la position de cet artiste comme pionnier de l'art moderne suisse.
Schaffen und Wirken von Abraham Hermanjat - Wegbereiter von Giacometti, Hodler und Amiet
Mit voller Berechtigung darf Abraham Hermanjat (1862-1932) zu den bedeutenden Schweizer Künstlern des frühen 20. Jahrhunderts gezählt werden. Neben seinen Freunden Giovanni Giacometti und Cuno Amiet machte er sich in der Kunstszene einen Namen und galt zu Lebzeiten als einer der modernen Künstler seines Landes. Diese Publikation ermoglicht eine wahre Neuentdeckung von Hermanjats Werk und seiner Karriere: Eingehend werden sein Schaffen und seine Positionierung in der Schweizer Kunstgeschichte untersucht. Ein besonderer Fokus richtet sich auf die orientalistische Phase seiner Malerei - unter anderem wird die abenteuerliche Geschichte eines Gemäldes aus der algerischen Zeit des Künstlers im Detail rekonstruiert - und auf seine Berufung zum passionierten Landschaftsmaler. Auch die beinahe alchemistische Maltechnik des Künstlers sowie seine Experimente mit der Fotografie werden analysiert; zudem widmen wir uns der fruchtbaren Beziehung zwischen Hermanjats Werken und dem Musée du Léman in Nyon. Eine personliche Annäherung an den Künstler bieten schliesslich die Erinnerungen eines Kunstkritikers - sie runden das facettenreiche Bild der Person Abraham Hermanjat und seiner Kunst ab. -
A cultural exchange with India
knotted threads presents the artistic dialogue that the Swiss artist Nesa Gschwend has maintained with India over many years. Special emphasis is placed on the search for phenomena that bind and distinguish these cultures and on the artistic exploration of their background. With knotted threads the artist brings the two cultural spaces together in striking manners. The book makes it possible to understand the works in terms of a lengthy artistic process, while also offering insight into the complex links, contradictions, friendships and into the opening of new spaces for dialogue that the exchange with India has enabled.
Ein künstlerischer Austausch mit Indien
"knotted threads" erfasst den langjährigen künstlerischen Dialog der Schweizer Künstlerin Nesa Gschwend mit Indien. Im Mittelpunkt stehen die Suche nach verbindenden wie unterscheidenden kulturellen Phänomenen und die Erforschung ihrer Hintergründe mit künstlerischen Mitteln. Mit "knotted threads" ("geknüpfte Fäden") verbindet sie die beiden Kulturräume auf augenfällige Weise. Das Buch ermoglicht einerseits die Eingliederung dieser Werke in einen längerfristigen künstlerischen Prozess, gibt aber auch Einblick in die vielschichtigen Verknüpfungen, in die Widersprüche und Freundschaften, und letztlich in die Öffnung neuer Dialogräume, die der Austausch mit Indien hervorgebracht hat. -
Simon Lamunière, Véronique Mauron et Julia Hountou, commissaires de la Triennale Valais / Wallis 2017, ont choisi le relais du Saint-Bernard, une aire de l'autoroute A9 suisse, pour y présenter la célèbre manifestation qu'ils organisent.
Une trentaine d'artistes suisses et internationaux créent et exposent leurs oeuvres dans cet espace exceptionnel et paradoxal associant nature, mobilité, consommation et liberté. Ce choix inhabituel permet à la fois de sortir des sentiers battus de la création artistique et de jeter un oeil dans les coulisses d'un marché de l'art qui a de plus en plus tendance à se rigidifier.
Le présent ouvrage est conçu comme un guide d'exposition en deux volumes, l'un avec des photos des oeuvres, l'autre avec des textes de présentation. Il inclut également un plan du site et un livret consacré aux organismes culturels du Valais partenaires de cette triennale remarquable.
