Les villes fortifiées de l'Empire du milieu, anciens symboles du pouvoir impérial ayant contribué à forger l'identité nationale, sont aujourd'hui un moyen de choix pour aborder la civilisation chinoise. Les milliers d'ouvrages de ce type construits tout au long de l'histoire de la Chine présentent une incroyable diversité de taille, de styles et de techniques. Parmi ceux recensés à ce jour se trouvent de nombreuses ruines, plus de cent cinquante villes ayant conservé des remparts longs d'un kilomètre ou plus, sans oublier bien sûr la célèbre Grande Muraille.
Négligées durant de longues années, partiellement tombées en ruines et en partie détruites volontairement au XXe siècle, les enceintes fortifiées chinoises font l'objet de vastes programmes de restauration ou de reconstruction depuis plusieurs décennies après la redécouverte de leur valeur culturelle exceptionnelle. Cet ouvrage présente, à l'aide de textes ainsi que de photos anciennes et récentes, 135 villes fortifiées chinoises réparties dans tout le pays.
Si l'on descend aujourd'hui dans les métros de nombreux pays d'Europe de l'Est et de pays ayant appartenu à l'URSS, le temps semble s'être arrêté. Les stations sont des chroniqueurs de l'histoire et de l'art d'une puissance mondiale disparue depuis longtemps. Pour ce titre, le photographe Frank Herfort dépeint une vingtaine de réseaux de métro de l'époque soviétique, de Moscou à Bucarest, de Bakou à Tbilissi. Il se concentre sur les détails ; il a ainsi capturé plus de 700 oeuvres d'art avec son appareil photo. Conçues comme des projets de prestige, distantes de milliers de kilomètres et créées dans des conditions différentes à des époques différentes, les stations de ses photographies sont combinées pour former une représentation holistique de l'art socialiste. At first glance, this illustrated book appears to present a mishmash of the widespread, in some cases unauthorized, unfinished buildings that make a decidedly striking mark on the barren landscape of southern Italy - without which something would almost be missing. On closer inspection, these symbols of stagnation are thought-provoking, a fact that is addressed in this book: from an anthropological-cultural and socio-economic level, via architecture and esthetics, to the existential foundations of life plans and their fragility.

Als Monumental-Skulpturen strahlen diese Wunderwerke der Statik eine schon fast sakral anmutende Ruhe aus.
